DESCRIPTION:Wendell Arneson:  A Place in Time \n\nWendell Arneson is a painter and mixed media artist.  “My work draws from an inventory of images that make multiple\, yet varied references allowing content to shuffle\, reinvent and remake itself.  Painting inhabits a place between the known and the unknown.  Art\, for me\, does not provide answers\, but provokes questions and seeks possibilities.  As an image-maker\, I am interested in the intersection of figuration and abstraction.  In the process of making I discover resolution by seeking clarity of an idea while honoring mystery and ambiguity.” \nWendell Arneson is a Wisconsin native\, earning a BA in studio art from Luther College\, Decorah\, Iowa and a MFA from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green\, Ohio.   Post-graduate studies include classes with Nathan Oliveira and Gregory Amenoff at the Santa Fe Institute of Fine Arts.  Arneson has exhibited widely regionally and nationally and his work is featured in numerous private\, public and corporate collections. \nArneson was appointed to the faculty of St. Olaf College in Northfield\, Minnesota in 1978 where he holds the position as a Professor Emeritus of Art. \n\n\nA PLACE IN TIME\nI am interested in work that inhabits in both objective and non-objective worlds. I am attracted to both gestures and non-descriptive marks as well as the power and ambiguity of symbols and images. Painting and mixed media drawing inhabits a place between the known and the unknown. \nThe work of this exhibit draws from an inventory of land images that make multiple yet varied references that allow for content to shuffle\, reinvent\, and remake itself. As an image maker\, I seek the intersection between figuration and abstraction.  Art\, for me\, does not provide answers but rather provokes questions and seeks possibilities. \nThis exhibition of abstract land paintings reference time\, place\, and memory.  The images may honor specific locations while also seeking\, through abstraction\, multiple layers of entrance and ambiguity for the viewer.  The images in the paintings are imaginatively less certain and provide a visual journey of transformation.  What matters most is a painterly dialogue between image\, structure\, color\, tactile surface\, and space.  The end result evokes a journey of discovery and imagining. \n“Seek clarity while honoring mystery and ambiguity” \n-Wendell H. SUMMARY:Exhibit at MAC - Our World is Changing
DESCRIPTION:Jan Smith: Our World is Changing- Let’s Change the World \nArtist Gallery Talk/Opening Reception today from 5-7 PM. \nMy recent work evolved during the pandemic\, when the world was not only confronted with a deadly virus\, but our vision was also consumed by extraordinary events. From this period\, the Storming Series emerged using dramatic landscapes from photos I have taken to create pastel and watercolor images that wrestled with the changing atmospheric storms of our time caused by climate change. \nAs an artist\, I am passionate about impact. I want my work to resonate with a viewer as something that is evocative\, serving as a call to action and a catalyst for change. In examining the impact of climate change\, I use the threatening appearance of landscapes to signal alarm and warning\, or the serene bucolic reference for landscape that may be threatened. The pleasant fleeting scene is only that\, fleeting and if not cared for\, it may be gone. \nMy studio work consists of both watercolor and pastel\, focusing on landscape\, sometimes painted plein air and more often from photos I have taken outdoors. I use landscape as a metaphor to mark brief periods in time\, transitions\, change and emotional impact. \nIn my Storming Series\, I examine the climate change driven eruptions that have charred and windswept and washed away landscapes\, structures and lives. Aspects examined more closely seek reasons and prevention for wildfires; air quality; water related issues or the lack of it in areas of severe drought; as well as rising sea temperatures\, glacial melt and warming of permafrost. \nThe imagery questions not only why\, but what can we do to change the course of decline rather than feel powerless as the chain of cause and effects magnifies. As my work evolves\, I hope to not only draw attention to the issues that threaten our surroundings\, our water and food sources\, but also encourage viewers to act in simple\, imaginative ways that may find solutions to slow the devastation. \nWhat A Wonderful World Series presents images of tranquility; bucolic landscapes\, or lovely flowers and plants: as if the images capture a static moment in time. They may evoke or represent a memory\, or even documentation of something meant to be preserved because it might be nearly lost. \nBy engaging in my art practice\, I hope to instill new awareness to a timely and imposing subject.
