The Journey of the Denis Sullivan

February 4, 2023 @ 1:00 PM

Back in the mid-1990s the Richard Horn family from rural Brooklyn donated white oak logs to help build the three-masted schooner, Denis Sullivan. Built by a nonprofit group made up of people who wanted to honor the maritime heritage of the Great Lakes through educational experiences on the schooner, she was to be the flagship of the State of Wisconsin. Through donations and thousands of volunteer hours, the Denis Sullivan was finished in 2000 and sailed the Great Lakes and beyond for the next 20 years. In September of 2022 an organization called World Ocean School took ownership of the schooner. The new owners are dedicated to providing immersive opportunities to learn through sailing tall ships so, the Denis Sullivan continues her educational mission. In September they began the process of relocating her to St. Croix with a plan to arrive in the U.S. Virgin Islands between December 15 and 25. As an early supporter of the schooner, Richard Horn decided he wanted to meet the Denis Sullivan when it arrived in St. Croix. Given the vagueness of the schedule, this was a daunting task to coordinate but worth the effort. Join us on February 4th at 1:00 at the Albertson Memorial Library for Richard’s presentation about the Denis Sullivan and its relocation to St. Croix.
