Birding

Green County is a birding paradise with numerous species found as winter and summer residents, and migratory transients. Bring your binoculars and wait for the show – good places to visit are the state parks and trails, and wildlife areas. (These are marked on the county map – request one via email or by calling 608.328.1838).

The bird population includes many colorful and unusual birds, including some threatened and endangered species. Here are just a few of the birds you will see throughout the Green County area: Pileated Woodpeckers, Red Tailed Hawks, Cooper’s Hawks, Pelicans (at Lake Belle View in Belleville), Eagles (often seen along the Sugar River and its tributaries, and at Beckman Lake at Browntown Cadiz Springs State Recreation Area), migrating Whooping Cranes, various species of Owls, and many different song birds.
