Exhbit continues through October 27, 2017. In January of 2012 while recovering from a near fatal car accident, Mark Hirsch purchased his first iPhone. He was encouraged by a friend to treat his new iPhone like his professional cameras. The first picture he took with his new iPhone was a photo of That Tree. He was instantly hooked! Mark had driven past and admired That Tree every day for nineteen years without ever taking a picture of it. This experience inspired Mark to embark on a unique adventure of making a photo-a-day of this lone bur oak tree in a Wisconsin cornfield. The year-long project was completed on March 23, 2013. That Tree, the fitting title of a full-color hardcover book, is published by Press Syndication Group (PSG). Mark regularly exhibits his photos of That Tree in galleries, and his story has been featured by many worldwide media organizations including CBS Sunday Morning, NBC News, The Sierra Club, Huffington Post, The Guardian, Le Monde, Chicago Tribune, Denver Post, San Francisco Chronicle, The Daily Mail (UK), and many more. Mark Hirsch is an editorial and corporate photographer, artist, and an inspiring public speaker based out of the unlikely place of Dubuque, Iowa. He spent twenty years in the newspaper industry as a photojournalist, photo editor, and visuals editor until ultimately embarking on a freelance career in 2006. His clients include Getty Images, The New York Times, and John Deere Corporation. Mark lives one mile from That Tree with a shaggy but lovable dog, Magnum. When not lying in a sea of cold trying to capture photographs of That Tree, Mark enjoys spending his time mountain biking, and hiking in the hills and valleys near his Platteville, Wisconsin home. Exhbit continues through October 27, 2017.

Photographer Jill Metcoff has been captivated by fire--in the form of controlled burning--since 1998. She is passionate about our environment, a concern which led her to this photographic project. Firelines has as its theme the transformation of the American landscape by fire. "Controlled burns" of forest, savanna, wetland, and prairie lead to regeneration, a practice going back millennia. Her photographs freeze-frame this process, catching in a split second the moment when fire is actor and conductor of change.

The ephemeral forms that fire takes as it sweeps through the landscape of southwest Wisconsin, renewing patchworks of prairie, forest, and savanna, are the subject of her book, Firelines. She pairs her photographs from controlled burns with historical commentary, poetic reflections, and her own observations to construct a vibrant narrative of prose and imagery. Firelines brings us intimately close to the power, swiftness, and mystery of the purposeful use of fire as practiced over millennia.

Sunday Concert Series - Pro Arte Quartet

Founded by conservatory students in Brussels in 1912, Pro Arte Quartet became one of the most celebrated ensembles in Europe in the first half of the twentieth century and was named Court Quartet to the Queen of Belgium. Pro Arte played their American debut in 1926, performing at the inauguration of the Hall of Music in the Library of Congress, Washington, DC. The quartet was performing in Madison, Wisconsin in May 1940 when Nazi forces invaded Belgium. The University of Wisconsin responded to the emergency by offering the quartet a permanent campus home, the first such arrangement at a major American university. That original brilliance continues to this day. The UW Pro Arte residency became a model of artist residencies that is now widely emulated throughout the country. Today, in addition to widely acclaimed performances of standard classical repertoire, the Pro Arte continues its tradition of championing new music.
