Wednesday: Noon until 4:30 pm and Saturday 8:00am until 1:00pm. Final outdoor market of the season is October 26. Indoor markets are held in the Masonic Temple Building (north side of the Square) on scheduled Saturdays in November, December, January, February, March and April.

Tani Diakite and the Afrofunkstars

You are invited to spend the evening at Monroe Arts Center for the final Summer of Music concert. The concert is from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on the south outdoor terrace (on corner of 11th Street and 14th Avenue) of Monroe Arts Center. The concert is FREE and open to the public. Madison's Tani Diakite and the Afrofunkstars will get listeners up and moving as they play West African blues, funk, and rhythm music. Tani Diakite is a musical force who has inspired an entire community of artists. With his Kamale n'goni, a West African ancestor to the banjo, and his plaintive singing, he never fails to drop the deepest blues around. The Kamale N'goni is a smaller, more popular version of this instrument. It is the centerpiece of a popular style of music from Mali called Wasulu Music. When you hear the blues played by Tani Diakite and the Afrofunkstars, you'll understand why it is often said that Mali is the birthplace of the blues. The Kamale N'goni is one of several African instruments that preceded the banjo, so you'll hear similarities to bluegrass music as well. A variety of beverages, including a selection of wines from Bailey's Run Vineyard and Winery, will be available for purchase before and during the concert. The concert will take place as scheduled rain or shine. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will move indoors to the Gunderson Stiles Concert Hall. In the event of inclement weather, concerts will be presented in MAC's Gunderson Stiles Concert Hall.

OPENING RECEPTION: Friday, August 30, 2019 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Gallery Talk: 5:30 pm "Jack knife artist" Levi Fisher Ames was a Civil War soldier, musician and maker of musical instruments, carpenter, prolific wood-carver, and animated storyteller. Having acquired his wood-carving skills during the war, Ames hand-carved his own impressive menagerie of over 600 domestic, wild, and mythical animals. Each carving was encased in a glass-fronted, hinged shadow box. In the 1890s, Ames took a selection of his imaginative carved menagerie on a regional tent road show tour as the "L.F. Ames Museum of Art." He exhibited them at regional fairs as a comprehensive sideshow, believing they needed to be seen as an interrelated work and that his storytelling was a central component of the whole. He recounted both tall and truthful tales about his "specimens" to the delight of audiences, tapping into the popularity of the circuses and sideshows that were prevalent throughout Wisconsin. Ames's wooden beasts and bugs, carved from life and legend, outlived their creator and were passed down through Ames's family (with a brief stay at a pawnshop during the Great Depression) until 161 shadow boxes and forty other pieces that belonged to Ames were given to Kohler Foundation, Inc.
