Wilde's oil paintings are a keen observation of the natural world. Throughout his career, he has shared a connection with the wooded hills and river valleys of the northern United States, as well as the pastoral landscapes of the Midwest. His connection with nature can be observed through an ability to depict animals living in their natural habitat. This is especially apparent through his passion for birds from their serene innocence to their tension for survival. Many of Wilde's works are created en plein aire, which allows him to capture the essence of time and place within the landscape.

Monroe Balloon and Blues Festival

Hot Air. Hot Blues. Cool Brews!

Launches are planned for 6 pm on both days plus Saturday morning at 6 am, with flights patterns following the prevailing gentle winds over the Green County countryside. When the propane runs low, pilots keep an eye out for open fields to land; providing a spectacle for the onlookers and photographers that follow the flights from the ground. Always a favorite, evening "balloon glows" are planned for 8:30 pm on both Friday and Saturday.

But the weekend just keeps getting better! Local bluesman Jimmy Voegeli has worked his mojo to put together a stellar lineup of blues bands to get the crowds groovin'.

Friday - Aaron Williams and the Hoodoo; Rev Raven and the Chain Smokin Altar Boys.  Saturday - Paul Flipowiza Band, Blues Disciples, Paul Kaye and the Blues Cartel, and the Chris O'Leary Band.

After the sun goes down the pilots will fire up their tethered balloons to provide a scenic backdrop for more music. Fest organizers are maximizing the entertainment value by locating the stage nearby the balloon glow so attendees can enjoy both at once. Spend the evening; food and beer will be available.

Also on Saturday is the Hot Air Hot Wheels Car Show (with vehicles in 21 categories) and fun and games for the kids.

The 2017 Monroe Balloon and Blues Festival is presented by Arc of Green County, an organization providing funding for area handicapped and disabled individuals.

Admission to the Green County Fairgrounds (2600 - 10th St.) is free, with parking onsite for a nominal fee. Free street parking is also available.

Kay Kittell lived and painted in a large rambling farmhouse north of Waupun Wisconsin, near the Horicon Wildlife Refuge. The farm itself is a sanctuary of woods, hills, pasture, alfalfa and corn fields. Kay studied art at Ripon College under Lester Schwartz. Later, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, she worked under Robert Grilley, Bill Armstrong, and Dean Meeker. Later still, she studied painting with Joanne Kindt and serigraphy with Tom Brady in Oshkosh. She was strongly influenced by the New York School, Georgia O'Keefe, and Helen Frankenthaler. Journeys to California and Alaska, or just looking at scarves provided her with inspiration. For example, the series of paintings on standing grasses began with the scarves. The vertical shapes of the first "scarves" paintings evolved into the vertical shapes of the grasses, and now, ribbons and spectrums.

3-D Wet Felting Art Class

Just what is three-dimensional wet felting? Join fiber artist Janis Merkle on Thursday, June 29 from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm at MAC to learn how to create your very own wet felt vessel. In only four hours, participants learn the basics of the wet felting process and then design, construct, and take home the vessel they have created. These vessels are created and shaped in one piece from wool fibers on a three-dimensional form. The application of water, heat, and agitation causes the wool fibers to meld into a solid felt that holds its shape. If desired, optional silk fiber embellishments can then be added to the surface. After trying out many fiber arts, including devoting ten years to hand weaving, instructor Janis Merkle discovered wet felting several years ago. She comments, "The transformation of loose wool fiber into felt using only soapy water seemed magical. The process of wet felting involves an element of serendipity, which increases its appeal for me." Merkle creates one-of-a-kind scarves and decorative felt vessels under the name Primrose Fiber Arts. The class fee for members of Monroe Arts Center is $45 plus a $15 supply fee, and the class fee for non-members is $50 plus a $15 supply fee. Provided supplies include wool roving and embellishment materials. Registration deadline is June 22. To register or for information call 608-325-5700 or in person at Monroe Arts Center, 1315 11th Street. Class size is limited.
