Written by the late Sam Shepard and directed by Monroe Theatre Guild Director Nick Hartwig - a hard hitting, emotionally charged dark comedy. Sam Shepard, best known for his acting career was also a skilled, award winning playwright. Shepard's plays often tell the story of families in conflict. Critics consider "True West" to be Shepard's signature piece.

This is the story of two estranged brothers whose paths cross again at their mother's home in the California desert. Austin is house sitting for his mother while she is on vacation in Alaska and working on a screenplay that has caught the interest of a Hollywood producer. Lee, his older brother, a clear loser and petty thief drops in unexpectedly and quickly bullies his way into staying at the house. When the Hollywood producer visits Austin to talk about promoting his screenplay, Lee pushes his way into the situation and is soon pitching his own idea for a trashy western to the producer. Ultimately Lee steals Austin's big break and the sparks fly.

Four local actors portray the characters in this two-act play. Luke Smetters of Monroe plays Lee. Luke is a well-known face at MTG and in other community theatres in the area. Jamie Ertmer of Apple River, IL plays Austin and is making his MTG acting debut. He has been in several community theatre productions in Freeport. Phil Rath of Monroe is also a familiar face at MTG, he plays Saul Kimmer the movie producer. Jennie Lembach of Monroe is quickly becoming a popular addition to the MTG family, she portrays the mother.

Monroe Theatre Guild will present five performances of "True West", March 22, 23, 29 and 30 at 7PM and March 31 at 2PM at the MTG theatre. An Opening Night Reception will be held at 6:30PM Friday, March 22 in the MTG lobby.

An exciting new special feature will follow the March 30th performance with a question and answer session with the actors and director. This new feature will allow audience members to get to know the actors and talk about what it takes to be part of such an emotionally charged production. This play is recommended for adult audiences due to strong language.

Tickets are on sale now on the MTG website at www.monroetheatre.com and at the Monroe Arts Center box office Tuesdays - Saturdays from 10AM to 5PM. Ticket information is also available by calling 608-325-1111.

Swiss Movie Night

Turner Hall of Monroe's 2019 Swiss Heritage Series will open its season with its annual Swiss Movie Night on Friday, March 29 at 7:30 pm in the Grand Hall. This year's film, Clara und das Geheimnis der Bären (Clara and the Secret of the Bears) was released in Switzerland in 2013 and garnered several film awards in various countries. Filmed in the Swiss canton of Graubünden and in Bavaria, Germany, 13-year-old Clara, who has a special sensitivity, connects with the spirit of a girl, Susanna, from two centuries earlier. Susanna warns Clara about a curse that falls on anyone who harms bears. Clara and her friend Thomas then find themselves in a dangerous adventure in an effort to restore the balance between humans and nature. The film is perhaps a commentary and lesson on Switzerland's 20th century eradication of bears from the Alps. After the last brown bear was shot and killed in 1904, wild bears did not exist in Switzerland throughout the rest of the century. Only since 2005 have bears begun to reappear in Switzerland, migrating from Italy. In 2016, a bear, from which the name Bern is derived, was spotted in canton Bern for the first time in 190 years. The 90-minute film, which is in German with English subtitles, is comparable to a G rating. Movie popcorn and beverages will be available, and a free-will donation will be accepted for the Swiss Heritage Series. The public is cordially welcome to attend. Turner Hall of Monroe is located at 1217 17th Avenue, and is handicapped-accessible. A trailer from the film may be viewed at http://TurnerHallofMonroe.org/clara.html
