    A fine way to sample Green County history is by visiting our many museums. Several of the museums pay homage to the cheesemaking heritage of the area.  Others highlight railroad history.  All provide a glimpse into the colorful past of our charming small towns and villages.  Hours vary so please call ahead.

    The Green County Historical Society Museum is housed in the former Universalist Church dating back to 1861.  The very first church service held here was a funeral for a soldier in the Civil War.

    The musuem has an archive of letters, papers, and newspaper articles of historical interest about Green County, including obituaries (indexed by surname - dating to early 1900's.)  Displays include rocks and stones unqiue to the area, military articles, items used for daily home life, clothing, children's toys, items about Monroe businesses, musical instruments including a beautiful antique piano, Cheese Days memorabilia, cheese-making tools, dental office items, carpentry and farm tools, hundreds of antique books, pictures of historical interest, a collection of mustache cups, and more.

    Also on the musuem grounds is the original Bethel School, a one-room schoolhouse.

    Open April 1 - October 31, daily 9 am - 4 pm. Discover the legacy of cheesemaking in Green County. Visit the National Historic Cheesemaking Center (see the additional listing under Museums) and the Imobersteg Farmstead Cheese Factory: step back into the late 1800's into an authentic cheese factory relocated from an area farm where it sat untouched since 1917. All the original equipment can be viewed in this factory that was once used for producing Brick, Swiss, and Limburger cheese using the milk from the 40 cows at the Imobersteg Farm, just over the border into Illinois.

    Herb and Helen Haydock got their start with brewery collectibles when Herb purchased 8 beer glasses while stationed with the U.S. Air Force in Munich, Germany back in 1951. He didn’t know it at the time, but this small purchase would lead having the largest private collection in the world.

    Let us take you back in time with historical artifacts on display including: brewery lithographed pictures, Cooper tools, wooden keg and cases, steins, growlers, 1928 Chevy Truck, Nascar cars, bar and beer lights, model brewery trucks, cars, trains and other brewery vehicles and much more.

    This collection has found the perfect home with the oldest brewery in Midwest and second oldest in the nation.

    Located in the restored Woelffer Drug Store, the musuem houses various collections related to the history of Monticello - including the Monticello Woolen Mill.

    Featured exhibit for 2009: “Jim Town," featuring the commerce that developed in Monticello when the Illinois Central and the Milwaukee Road railroads passed by the village beginning in the 1880’s. This center of commerce became known as Jim Town.

    National Historic Cheesemaking Center

    Discover the legacy of cheesemaking in Green County.  Housed in a restored railroad depot (years ago the freight room was often filled with Green County cheese awaiting rail tranport to areas all over the United States); the center features cheesemaking equipment, dairy farming heritage, cheese factory replicas, railroad memorabilia, and local history. Excellent 10-minute audio tour gives an overview of the museum displays; docents are also available for personalized tours and questions.
